The most highly regarded colleges and universities have regional accreditation. That means that the entire institution, not just certain programs, has been accredited by one of the following: Middle States, New England, North Central, Northwest, Western, or Southern Associations of Colleges and Schools.

The next category is national accreditation. Included in this category are public and private as well as faith-based institutions. Many of them are niche institutions that have a narrower focus and may well offer programs that larger institutions do not offer. So look for either regional or national accreditation. There are institutions that have both.

When checking to see if the college or university you have chosen is accredited, also check to see that the accrediting organization is accredited by the US Department of Education, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools.

It sounds like a lot of effort is required but your personal investment of time and resources in obtaining a degree, makes it imperative.
